Questions and answers.
What does TAS stand for?
Together and Stronger. TAS Americas is the house of the Together and Stronger family for the United States: for everyone with a foreign-born story who lives here, and for Americans living abroad.
Who can join?
Anyone with a foreign-born story who lives in the United States, from every continent and every country of the hemisphere, together with their children, relatives and friends; and any US citizen or permanent resident living abroad. People living in Canada join through TAS Canada; TAS Latin America welcomes residents of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Is there a fee?
Membership is free for the first 90 days — one membership per adult, with children under 18 included on a parent’s membership. Associations also join at no cost for their first 90 days.
Do you ask about my status?
Never. We do not collect information about immigration or residence status, on the membership form or on the member card, and we never sell personal information.
Is this insurance?
No. Membership is not insurance. Insurance and repatriation programs are offered through licensed providers, and the Mutual Aid Compact is a commitment between associations: it is not insurance and creates no right to payment.
I lead an association. How do we join?
Associations join at no cost for their first 90 days and keep their name and their independence. Register on the page for community leaders, and your association takes its seat in the network and the Mutual Aid Compact.
What does my member card do?
Your card is your membership. It lives on your phone, opens every program in the twelve areas of benefit, and is recognized by every house of the family, so it moves with you when you move.
I live in Canada, Latin America or the Caribbean. Can I join here?
Canada has its own house. People living in Canada join through TAS Canada, and the card is the same. For residents of Latin America and the Caribbean, TAS Latin America is open; Americans living there are welcome here. The guides, Scam Watch and the Consular Desk on this site remain free for everyone to read.
I am American and live abroad. Is this my house?
Yes. US citizens and permanent residents living in Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Africa or Oceania are members of TAS Americas wherever they live, and every other house of the family recognizes their card. The guides for living abroad are written for you.
How is this site related to the other Together and Stronger sites?
Together and Stronger is one family. Together and Stronger is the parent organization; TAS Americas and seven other regional houses serve Europe, Canada, India, China, Africa, East Asia and West Asia; TAS Member Services negotiates the benefits; and TAS Foundation gives free first help. One card is recognized everywhere, and TAS World shows every house.
Do you give legal, immigration or tax advice?
No. Our guides are general information. When you need advice, we refer you to qualified professionals and to the public authority that decides the matter.
Are you part of a government or a consulate?
No. TAS Americas is independent and is not a government body, consulate or public authority. The Consular Desk explains how to reach your country’s consulate in the United States, or the nearest US embassy or consulate if you live abroad; it does not act on behalf of either.
How can I serve?
Members who wish to give their time serve as community ambassadors, association liaisons, interpreters, guide writers, mentors and welcome volunteers. Serve with us.
How do I change or delete my details?
Write to us from the email address you joined with. We correct your details or delete your record, as you ask.
I think I have been targeted by a scam. What should I do?
Stop all contact and send no money or codes. Tell your bank at once, report it to the local police and to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov (or, abroad, to the authority that handles fraud where you live), and read Scam Watch. We never ask you for money, passwords or one-time codes.
Which languages do you serve members in?
English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Write to us in any of the four, and members who serve as interpreters help us answer in many more.
