TAS Americas serves two journeys that run in opposite directions: the people who have made their lives here, and the Americans who have made their lives elsewhere. Both are welcome as members, and both hold the same card.

Building a life in the United States

Members. Free for the first 90 days.

You came to build something. You do not have to build it alone.

  • One membership per adult, children under 18 included, and a digital member card on your phone.
  • Benefits we negotiate for the whole community: flights home, money transfers, phone plans, health programs and insurance through licensed providers.
  • Help with the first years: a bank account, a credit history, a driver’s license, a lease, school places and recognition of your qualifications.
  • Care for the parents who visit, and for the parents who stay behind while you are far away.
  • Associations from your home country, linked to a network across the country.
  • A card recognized by every house of the family: if you move, your membership moves with you.

  • A community of fellow members in the cities where you now live.
  • A way back in: guidance for the year you decide to return home.

Twelve areas of benefit, chosen for families across borders.

One household has little bargaining power. Hundreds of thousands of households speaking with one voice have a great deal. TAS Member Services negotiates on behalf of every member; your membership covers twelve areas of everyday life, and eight of them are shown here.

Your first ninety days.

Whether you have just arrived in the United States or just moved abroad, the first three months decide a great deal. This is the order in which members tell us things matter, and where the membership helps at each step.

  1. Week one

    Connected and oriented

    • A phone plan and data that work from day one
    • Your member card on your phone
    • Scam Watch, before anyone calls you
    • Your consulate registered, if you live abroad
  2. Month one

    Banked and housed

    • A Social Security number or ITIN, and a first bank account
    • A lease understood before you sign
    • Money home on fair terms
    • A state ID or driver’s license, and a doctor found
  3. Month three

    Building and belonging

    • A credit history started from zero
    • Your degree or license on its way to recognition
    • Children settled in school
    • An association, and people who stand with you

Every year, the road leads home.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year, a graduation, a wedding, a parent’s birthday: for a family spread across countries, each of these is a journey to plan, to pay for and to make. The membership is built around it.

  • Booked in good time

Holiday fares and connections negotiated while seats remain, on the routes members fly most.

  • Gifts that arrive

Money and gifts sent ahead through regulated providers, in the hands of the people waiting for them.

  • When parents visit

Travel medical cover for parents staying with you, arranged through licensed providers, so a long visit stays a happy one.

  • When you cannot be there

Referrals for elder care for parents at home, so help is close even when you are not.

Two directions, one bridge.

Whichever way you move, capable people stall at the same practical gates. Each guide sets out what is required, in the order you will meet it.

These guides are general information. They are not legal, immigration, tax or financial advice. Rules differ from place to place and change over time; always confirm with the public authority concerned.

No community should have to pass the hat alone.

Long before there were websites, there were hometown associations, alumni clubs, chambers of commerce and congregations. They found work for the newly arrived, settled disputes and made sure no one was buried without ceremony. TAS Americas exists to make them stronger, never to replace them.

What we believe.

  1. Together we are always stronger.

A household negotiating alone is easy to overlook. A community negotiating together is not.

  2. We build stronger communities.

The student, the grandmother and the business owner want different things; in one organization, each of them gets it.

  3. Distance does not break a family.

Distance wears a family down slowly. We are here so that the thread never snaps.

  4. No one is left to strangers.

When a member falls ill, loses work or dies far from home, the community stands with the family.

  5. Excellence is a form of respect.

We are careful, punctual and courteous with every person we serve.

Questions, answered plainly.

What does TAS stand for?

Together and Stronger. TAS Americas is the house of the Together and Stronger family for the United States: for everyone with a foreign-born story who lives here, and for Americans living abroad.

Who can join?

Anyone with a foreign-born story who lives in the United States, together with their children, relatives and friends, and any US citizen or permanent resident living abroad. People living in Canada join through TAS Canada; TAS Latin America welcomes residents of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Is there a fee?

Membership is free for the first 90 days — one membership per adult, with children under 18 included on a parent’s membership. Associations also join at no cost for their first 90 days.

Will you ask about my status?

Never. We do not collect information about immigration or residence status, on the membership form or on the card, and we never sell personal information.

Is this insurance?

No. Membership is not insurance. Insurance and repatriation programs are offered through licensed providers, and the Mutual Aid Compact is a commitment between associations that creates no right to payment.

I lead an association. How do we join?

Associations join at no cost for their first 90 days and keep their name and independence. Register on the page for community leaders and your association takes its seat in the network and the Mutual Aid Compact.

What does the member card do?

The card is your membership. It lives on your phone, opens every program in the twelve areas of benefit, and every house of the family recognizes it, so it moves with you.

How is this site related to the other Together and Stronger sites?

Together and Stronger is one family. Together and Stronger is the parent organization; TAS Americas and seven other regional houses serve Europe, Canada, India, China, Africa, East Asia and West Asia; TAS Member Services negotiates the benefits; and TAS Foundation gives free first help. One card is recognized everywhere.

Do you give legal, immigration or tax advice?

No. Our guides are general information. When you need advice, we refer you to qualified professionals and to the public authority that decides the matter.

How can I serve?

Members who wish to give their time serve as community ambassadors, association liaisons, interpreters, guide writers, mentors and welcome volunteers. Serve with us.
